Over the last six months, Senegalese kora master Seckou Keita has worked intensively with arranger Alex Wilson to translate the complexity and glorious verve of his music to an ensemble of western instruments. The new material will be performed for the first time on 15th January 2019 at a very special concert at Howard Assembly Room, Leeds, by Sinfonia Cymru musicians Abel Selaocoe(cello) and Helen Wilson (flute), award-winning jazz pianist Zoe Rahman, and Paul Moylan (double bass). This performance will follow an introduction and performance by Seckou Keita on kora.
This will be the world premiere of music written by Seckou Keita, whose music will for the very first time be arranged for a small ensemble of piano, cello, double bass and flute in a unique concert that blurs the boundaries between the musical traditions of West Africa and Europe. Tickets available from www.operanorth.co.uk
The scored Music Book will be available to purchase on the night, and will be generally available from spring 2019, join Seckou’s mailing list at www.seckoukeita.com for details.
A collaborative project between Seckou Keita and Alex Wilson in partnership with Opera North, Sinfonia Cymru and Theatr Mwldan. This project has been made possible with the support of Arts Council England and the National Lottery and the PRS Foundation.
